I released a set of images as a series. It is actually the first time I combined a collection in which the overall theme - or in musical terms: album - is more important than the single image/song.
You find the ‘calm waters series’ over on Behance. This work being my entry into that platform.
Usually I go with what the images present me. I let the emotion and excitement get me to pick up an image for editing and go from there. So having images look very similar editing wise is not a priority for my usual work. In fact I do not worry about it as I see it rather limiting in my artistic approach I like to take. Do not confuse it with a non cohesive appearance. My artistic vision and style of editing gives my imagery a pretty distinct look and feel. So I do at least hope that they are recognizable as Kai Hornung images.
But with this string of images I made sure to have them really stand together and give them a literal flow and seamless connection with each other. This was quite challenging considering that the images were taken on different locations on lake Königssee in Bavaria, Germany, and during different lighting situations that morning. So the editing process was way more demanding than just having settings synchronized or automatizations running. I enjoyed this challenge though and am proud of having this personal project finalized.
The images themselves were taken on a very foggy September morning in 2017. I was on a photo tour with friends. This morning was on the end of that week long tour, so we were all pretty tried after traveling and hiking through the Alps the days prior.. The quiet moment of a slowly gliding boat across Königssee was special. My eyes did not have anywhere else to rest but the ripples running away from the boat. When I started photographing those I instantly knew I would want to make a series of it. It took me 2,5 years now to eventually finish this project. Mainly just because I never felt that my editing would do the scenery, the feel of it and the artistic vision I had in mind justice. I am proud of having this finished now as I feel it being an important mile stone on my journey of artistic expression. And it will not be the last series. For sure.
